It’s Time to Inspect for Breaks for Leaks

Missing or broken sprinkler heads can be hard to find because most irrigation systems run overnight or early in the morning. Running an irrigation system with broken and damaged sprinkler heads can cause overflowing and water flooding the landscape.

Look for heads that do not pop up fully or are tilted as they can unexpectedly spray to the wrong areas.

If you find a broken head, place a flag next to the broken sprinkler so you will be able to work on it later. You may be able to fix broken heads yourself, but if you are unsure, go with a pro — notify an irrigation professional.

It’s just that easy.

Cut. Insert. Click. In just three simple steps, you can make a permanent connection that you can verify by sight, sound, and feel. No specialized tools required.

Here’s how it works:

CUT the PE-RT or PEX tube straight and square and validate the cut with the SquareBuddy.

INSERT the tube into the SmartClick connector and push–there’s no need to mark insertion depth.

When you hear a CLICK, that means the spring steel clamp has snapped closed, indicating that a secure connection has been made.

The polycarbonate sight glass on all SmartClick fittings provides an easy way to visually validate the connection. If you heard the click and the red wedge has been displaced, the clamp is activated, and the fitting has successfully created a watertight seal.

Tool-Free Installation

Achieve a secure connection without the need for specialized tools. All that’s required is a sharp straight-blade tube cutter and, optionally, the SmartClick SquareBuddy to double-check the squareness of your cuts.

Durable Materials

Constructed from robust PPSU polymer, polycarbonate, and spring steel, SmartClick fittings are designed to last the life of the potable system. Each end of these fittings features two EPDM o-rings per side, stopping water in its tracks. The spring steel clamp resists changes in temperature and pressure, ensuring the connection remains secure.

What type and size tubing is SmartClick is compatible with?

SmartClick will only work with PE-RT (ASTM F2769) and PEX (ASTM F876), copper tube sized (CTS), SDR 9 tubing. Only these types and size tubing have the proper wall thickness, outside and inside diameters to seal and mechanically hold with the SmartClick fitting system. PE-RT and PEX, copper tube sized (CTS), SDR9 tubing with an oxygen barrier typically used in Hydronic heating and cooling applications will also work with the SmartClick system. Any type of iron pipe size (IPS) tubing or “pipe” will NOT work properly with SmartClick. Copper, CPVC, polybutylene (PB) and composite PEX-Al-PEX tubing will NOT work with SmartClick fittings.

Are SmartClick fittings removable and/or reusable?

No. SmartClick fittings are designed to be permanent. Once they are installed on the tubing by evidence of the activation wedge being dislodged (see IOM), the fittings can only be removed by cutting out the associated section of tubing. Once the activation wedge has been dislodged, by installation on tubing or otherwise, the fitting must be discarded and can NOT be re-used.

For more than four decades, Sims Plastics has built a reputation for quality, reliability, and exceptional service. With a strong foundation for quality, reliability, and exceptional service. We are committed to growth, innovation, and maintaining the high standards that define its name. 

Sims Plastics was established in 1979 by Sylvistia (“Sylvester”) Sims under the name Alco, in a 10×20 foot building in Gardendale, Texas. Sylvester worked for Olsen Engineering by day and developed irrigation designs by night.

From a modest beginning, the company continued to grow. In 1980, Alco relocated to a larger facility to accommodate its expansion. Sylvester also made the decision to leave Olsen Engineering to transform Alco into a thriving and respected business.

As the company evolved, Alco became Sims Services and in 1988 moved to Odessa, Texas to its current location. At that time, the company employed three dedicated team members-marking the start of a new era of growth and success.

In 1995 Sylvesters grandson Glynn Braudaway, joined the company.

Over the years, his leadership, dedication, and vision have continued to drive forward. That same year, the company proudly transitioned to the name Sims Plastics Inc. marking a new chapter of growth and recognition within the community.

In 1996 Sylvester Sims passed away on Christmas day, following a courageous battle with leukemia. Remembered for his honesty, dedication, and strong character, his legacy continues to inspire the values of Sims Plastics today.

Today, Glynn Braudaway proudly serves as the sole owner, carrying on his grandfather’s legacy of integrity and excellence. Our foundation was built on family, integrity, and hard work.   Today the company has grown to three locations and employees 25 team members and continues to be guided by the same core principles.

 

Congratulations to Glynn and the entire Sims Plastics team on a fantastic 46-year run of outstanding service to our community!

It’s Peak Season for Warm Season Grasses!

The growth chart for warm-season grasses throughout the seasons looks like a simple curve. They start ramping up their growth once warmer temperatures come in February and March, peaking at around June to July. When temperatures start getting cooler, their growth slows down; this usually happens around late summer and continues throughout the fall and winter months.

Mow High and Mow Properly

Your lawn will thank you with vigorous growth –
above and below the surface!

This summer, you should let your grass grow a little taller and mow higher. Mowing your turf high encourages strong root growth, which helps your lawn become more heat-tolerant and drought-resistant. Taller grass also provides more shade that discourages weeds from growing and cools your soil down a little. 

For warm-season grasses, you should set your mowing height between 2 to 3 inches high. 

Watering your lawn is key to keeping it alive throughout the summer months. It’s important to know what type of grass you have on your lawn partly because their water needs will be quite different. When temperatures reach 85 degrees, warm-season grass types need about 1 inch of water per week, and cool-season grasses double that. 

The best time to water your grass is the early morning, between 4 a.m. and 8 a.m. This allows more water to reach the roots, reduces water waste due to evaporation, and gives the grass a chance to dry off. If you water too late in the morning, you can scald your lawn. Avoid evening watering at all costs because your grass will stay wet for too long, inviting fungal diseases.

Drip irrigation can save up to 70% of the water used by sprinkler systems?

Drip tubing is used in the delivery of water directly to the roots of plants. Specifically, drip tubing is made from polyethylene and has emitters that are placed at intervals along the tube that correspond with the placement of each plant. This ensures that water is delivered directly to each plant’s root zone.

Drip irrigation is a water-efficient and effective way to water plants. In fact, it can save up to 70 percent of the water used by sprinkler systems. It can also increase crop yield by 90 percent compared to traditional methods. Its high-water efficiency means that farms can use less water and still produce more food.
